Good Aircraft Accident

Posted by: chic on 22/08/05

The Sydney suburban newspaper Manly Daily of 2 nd July 2005 printed this article under the following banner headline and introduction "EXPLORING WHAT LURKS BENEATH".

‘Little is known about the wrecks of aircraft in waters off the NSW coast. JOHN MORCOMBE tells of a new article by Collaroy Plateau maritime archaeologist Tim Smith examining the subject.' The text covered several engaging observations; however, my main interest was the large colorized photograph of a Lockheed Electra 10B with its nose cone nestling in the surf. A few lines of text gave a somewhat lifeless description of several minutes of heady action. The brilliant captain was the legendary Jimmy Broadbent, of record breaking fame, and I was his inexperienced first officer. You can read the true version of the event in my book ‘ Syd's Pirates ' (regretfully out-of-print) or ‘Syd's Last Pirate' available on CD-ROM. (Cutting kindly forwarded by Leon Callaghan.)
